We are currently offering 3 classes that teach software used to detail. Intro to Revit is an entry-level class, and it is offered both as an in-person class and as a distance-learning class. Revit for Detailing and Fabrication in Revit are more comprehensive and each is offered as a 2-part series in an online format.
Detailing Classes
Detailing is a balance between general sheet metal knowledge and specialized software knowledge. Learning good duct construction methods, fitting selection and the space requirements for ductwork — in addition to all the other trades our work shares space with — are all things that can be learned through the regular apprenticeship classes and on the jobsite. Detailers use software especially designed for drawing 3D buildings and ductwork. The software is what we are focusing on in these continuing education classes. To become a detailer, you must find a contractor willing to train you in detailing. If you apply yourself to really learning the software, it can help you convince a contractor you are a good candidate and worthy of their time to train.
In person, distance learning or online — which is the right class format for you?
Intro to Revit will be taught in person. If you need hands-on help with the computer, do not have access to a computer with the capabilities to run the software, or prefer the learning environment of a classroom, the in-person classes are best for you. There is no prerequisite for the in-person classes; all you need to bring is your willingness to learn. The in-person classes run for 6 weeks, 2 evenings a week. Check the continuing education schedules of nearby training centers to see when this class is offered in your area.
Intro to Revit will also be taught through distance learning. The class will meet 2 evenings a week via Zoom. You must have basic Windows-based computer skills to take this class, including the ability to install and remove programs and save/save as, copy, paste, move and delete files. You also must have access to a computer with the capabilities to run the software. If you are unsure if your computer can handle it, a link is provided below for Autodesk’s recommendations. You must be capable of working on your own, with an instructor available for guidance during the class periods. This class will run for 7 weeks, 2 evenings per week. The first week will be used for software and computer setup. This class will be offered via distance learning when there is enough interest. If you are interested, please contact BrianL@smw104jatc.org.
The Revit for Detailing and Fabrication in Revit classes are offered fully online. The 2 classes together will give existing detailers a very solid foundation to begin detailing using Revit. This is also a good starting point for members who are not currently working as full-time detailers but would like to in the future. Basic computer skills and access to a capable computer are required. Students must be able to work independently, as instructor help is not as readily available. There are no set class times, only weekly due dates for class assignments and quizzes. The Revit for Detailing class is a 13-week class requiring 3 hours per week, and the Fabrication in Revit class is 12-week class requiring 4 hours per week. There is a 2-week break between the end of Revit for Detailing and the start of the Fabrication in Revit class.

Intro to Revit 2025
If you are not planning on becoming a full-time detailer but would like to learn enough Revit to be able to do some simpler tasks in Revit on the jobsite, the Intro to Revit class may be all that you need. This class may also give you enough exposure to the software so you can determine if detailing is a viable option for you. It provides hands-on experience using the latest technology for detailing. Please request the class syllabus for more information on what is covered in the class.
Intro to Revit (in person)
-
- Prerequisite: Local 104 Member in good standing
- Description: 6-week, in-person class for 2 evenings per week (40 hours total)
Intro to Revit is designed for those members who have access to Revit on a jobsite and would like to be able to use the software to perform simple tasks themselves, or think they might like to become detailers but have not had exposure to detailing software. It will be taught at a moderate pace, covering the user interface, basic modeling skills, drawing Revit duct, converting Revit duct to Fabrication duct, modifying Fabrication duct and spooling. Very basic computer experience is helpful but not required.
Detailing – online Software classes
We are offering two 12-week classes that teach the software used to detail. The first class is Revit, a 3D Building Information Model program. It will be followed by Fabrication, an add-in to Revit that draws ductwork. The two classes together will give existing detailers a very solid foundation to begin detailing in Revit. This is also a good starting point for members who are not currently working as full-time detailers but would like to. Members are encouraged to take these classes as many times as needed.
We intend to offer this two-class series twice a year, starting in September and January. The classes below have been scheduled.
- Revit 2025 for Detailing (Fall-24) – 9/12/24 through 12/19/24
- Fabrication in Revit 2025 (Winter-25) – 1/9/25 through 4/10/25 (continuation from the September Revit class)
- Revit 2025 for Detailing (Winter-25) – 1/8/25 through 4/10/25
- Fabrication in Revit 2025 (Spring-25) – 4/17/25 through 7/17/25 (continuation from the Jan Revit class)
Revit 2025 for Detailing (online)
- Prerequisites:
- Journeyperson in good standing, or Apprentice on the Coordinator’s List.
- A computer and good basic computer skills (Windows based)
- Description: This is a 3 hours per week,12-week fully online class. The first class will be a Zoom meeting orientation. The remaining classes will be fully online. The class will cover what Detailers need to know to begin working in Revit. Student Revit software will be provided. Prior CAD experience is not necessary. Please request the class syllabus for more information on what is covered & how the online classes work
Fabrication in Revit 2025 (online)
- Prerequisites: Must have successfully completed Revit 2025 for Detailing, or obtain instructor’s permission
- Description: This fully online class is 4-hour per week for 12-weeks. This class will follow the Revit for Detailing class, to teach members how to work with Fabrication duct inside Revit. It is a start-to-finish approach to the steps a detailer must do to produce a shop drawing.

Autodesk Revit 2025 Computer Requirements and Recommendations
Autodesk publishes computer recommendations for using their products. If you would like to check if your computer has the correct requirements, please check out the link below.
The Minimum: Entry-Level Configuration is good enough for the distance-learning class. If you plan to purchase a computer, or if you will be taking online classes, the Value: Balanced Price and Performance specs would be a better choice.
