Building trades service apprentices from Sheet Metal Workers Local 104 recently participated in a field trip to the USS Hornet Sea, Air and Space Museum in Alameda, California. A mechanical marvel, the USS Hornet is the perfect place for service apprentices to be immersed in a totally mechanical environment that contains many examples of sheet metal work.
The trip to the USS Hornet is a favorite for service apprentices, as docents commonly include details in their behind-the-scenes tours the general public doesn’t receive. The almost total lack of automatic controls in the mechanical operation of the ship, and the resulting reliance on human effort under trying conditions, is an impressive scene for apprentices to take in.
